18-35 year old males. This is the standard target audience for adult cartoons and the most important for television stations to get appeal from.

The target audience is defined in terms of demographic (and sometimes psychographic) characteristics, such as age, sex, education, income, buying habits, and the like. Here is a discussion about the target audience of the Simpsons: By J. Solimine "Don't make stupid assumptions" This is the last good season of the Simpsons. I am a Simpsons purist. You may say well you are too old and not the target audience anymore but, I am 15 so I was not yet born when this show began. I have seasons one through ten on dvd and watch them regularly. You obviously did not understand or pick up on the true genius of the early seasons. They were hysterical and I have still not gotten bored of them. But on to another point, the Simpsons truly have changed and went far downhill. They went from such ideas as Mr. Plow, The Stone Cutters, the infamous Two cars in every garage and three eyes of every fish, and who could forget Homer's Enemy Frank Grimes or as his friends like to refer to him Grimy. Now that you are thinking about how great they were look what they have now I saw now they are having Marge be an online gamer, wow that sounds like a really good idea, or how about Ralph Wiggum running for president, that was sure a great one. I can not stand the new seasons of the Simpsons and they really need to stop before they just embarrass themselves further. Do not even get me started on the movie which was the last act of a desperate man trying to squeeze as much money out of a fading piece of history. I was so excited to see it when i saw they were making a movie but then began to think how bad the show has gotten and the movie just tried to use the things that were not allowed on tv. It was the most pathetic thing I have ever seen and I wish I had never viewed it but sadly I saw it in the theaters and left after about half way through I could not take it. This is all proving that I am part of the target audience and have stopped watching years ago.
hope this helps

Who is their target... 18-39 year old males.

How to target... The show is basically told from Homer's point of view, sure there are various stories and story lines that don't involve Homer... But Homer is the lead and Homer is a late 30's early 40's balding fat man... like many in the targeted audience...

Why does it appeal... People in that audience relate to the opinions of the show, especially Homers. They enjoy the fact that Homer can say things they can't... and it's funny.

18-39 year old males also relate to Bart, because growing they were or knew a Bart.

So they were Bart and can relate and now they're Homer and can relate.
