Question:
Is The Simpsons still relevant?

The show has been on for 20 years. When it came out it was the hottest show on the planet. It's known for poking fun at most anything in modern culture/society in a non-abusive, non-insulting manner. Even though it's still on the air, is it still a relevant show? Does it still push the envelope & cause a stir?

No... does anybody actually ever watch it these days? I gave up years ago.

No. It was the hottest thing for a long time, but now we have American Dad, and even better, Family Guy. These two shows definitely push the envelope and get away with a lot of hilarious irreverence, especially being on FOX, a known conservative network.

I try watching The Simpsons when it comes on, and even the newer, slightly edgier episodes are dull and tame in comparison to Family Guy.

I still haven't seen The Simpsons Movie yet, and this is why.

I think I've seen literally every episode from the beginning and I still watch it every Sunday. In my opinion, it is still a very clever show and is absolutely relevant. They make jokes about events, past and current. Every week they keep up with Family Guy and American Dad and, even though I love those shows to death, The Simpsons doesn't need cut-aways to be funny!

No, it's terrible. Almost like a pale imitation of Family Guy. I happily own the first 8 seasons of The Simpsons on DVD, but I don't care for many episodes after that point. I check a new episode out every once in a while, but find myself loosing interest and saddened that a show I once loved so much has become so bland and silly.

The plots have repeated themselves in several episodes, however they are always updated to fit the new times. I think the Simpsons does a great job at staying on top of current themes and is most definitely relevant.

Yes it is still relevant,

The show has changed and evolved over the years, especially with shock value shows like south park and family guy on the air. The Simpsons doesnt have the mockery of popular culture like South Park, nor the strength of story, and it doesnt have the high joke output of Family Guy.

What I have noticed is that the Simpsons now plays a more emotional role with it's characters, trying to get us to identify with them more.

The story commonly revolves around secondary characters like Moe or Mr. Burns as oposed to shows like Family Guy where that doesnt happen.

The Simpsons have always been the best at doing shows that parody movies, books, and american history, looking for these sometimes subtle references is always fun.

The shows this year in my opinion have been pretty decent. I especially liked the one where Bart and Ralph and the other bad kids go on a field trip with Principal Skinner, and the one where Mr. Burns starts his own Basketball team.

The visual humor has also come more to the forefront in the show, with lots of funny songs and colorful fantasies.

So yes it is still relevant and funny.

not really, it takes too much to try and "offend" people now, most non-child orientated cartoons follow this formula to poke fun at culture and in the next few years it will be outdated as technology and society evolve and the new generation grows up with the simpsons (family guy, american dad, ect) always " for poking fun at most anything in modern culture/society " is now the norm, something new will need to take its place

It's not Masterpiece Theater or the solution to world hunger - it's a comedic TV show. They do a good job of churning writers so that they get fresh ideas. Plus, lets face it, the world keeps giving them fodder to work with.

Bottom line, I still laugh when watch.

Yeah, the Simpsons are still better than the Family Guy even after all these years.
